Iâm woken up by my phone ringing. For a moment, my heart leaps into my mouth, hoping itâs Thomas calling to say that Iâve got it all wrong, heâs not sleeping with Cat at all and the whole sabbatical idea was a stupid joke.
Itâs not Thomas. Itâs Michelle.
âHowâs Claire this morning?â she asks.
âI donât know,â I tell her groggily. âIt was a difficult night, but I left her fast asleep earlier. I think sheâs over the worst.â
âYou sound dreadful. Are you OK?â
âNot really.â
âWhatâs up?â
âOh, just stuff. Donât worry about me.â
âWhat stuff?â
âI found out Thomas is sleeping with Cat. We just broke up.â
âI did think they seemed very close. How did you find out?â
I fill her in on the events of the night and my disastrous breakfast.
âThe worst bit,â I tell her at the end, âis that Iâd really like to go home now, but Iâm stuck here for three more days. I have no intention of seeing Thomas again, obviously, but Claire is going to want to spend as much time as she can with him, so Iâm basically stuck moping around the hotel until itâs time to leave.â
âThat, at least, I can do something about. Why donât you try to get a couple of hoursâ kip and Iâll pick you up at noon. Jackâs got a work issue he needs to sort out, so heâs not going to miss me.â
âThanks, but you donât need to take pity on me, Michelle. Iâm a big girl, I can look after myself.â
âI know, and this isnât pity. Youâre doing me a favour, because at the moment Iâm also stuck here with nowhere to go. Be in the lobby of your hotel at noon, OK?â
âOK.â
Iâm just crawling back under the covers when thereâs a tentative knock at the door. Sighing, I slip on a dressing gown and pad across to open it.
âIâm so sorry about last night,â Claire tells me. âIt never occurred to me that the biscuits were spiked. Did I make a terrible fool of myself?â
âYou were⦠interesting,â I tell her.
âOh, God. Was Thomas embarrassed? Thereâs nothing worse than embarrassing your children in front of their peers. There was one time when he was little, andâ ââ
âIâm really sorry, Claire,â I interrupt. âThe truth is that I hardly got any sleep last night and Iâve had a difficult morning so far. I donât want to be rude but I really need to go back to bed. Do you mind?â
âOf course. Iâm so sorry. What would you like me to tell Thomas? Heâll be disappointed not to see you.â
âIâm sure heâll be just fine. Go and have fun with your son.â
I gently close the door before she has a chance to say anything else.
